Allegany County
|
Location: Regions : Western : Allegany County
There is a reason the Indians gave the region the name Allegany meaning "beautiful stream." Nature lovers can still admire the flow of cool mountain water as they enjoy the natural beauty of the pristine forests around them. The adventurous can also enjoy hunting, fishing, boating, canoeing, camping, swimming, biking, hiking and rappelling in the area’s state parks. Picturesque towns are scattered throughout the landscape accented with quaint antique boutiques, great coffee shops and urban-style entertainment. One can also take a step back into another era when a young George Washington set the course of American history at the French and Indian frontier outpost Fort Cumberland. And don’t miss the Thrasher Carriage Museum and the C&O Canal started in 1828 under the presidency of John Quincy Adams and finished 25 years later in Cumberland. Allegany County is located 138 miles from Washington, D.C.
